Someone has opened a bank account at my address

Had a letter through addressed to someone who doesn't live at my address congratulating them on opening an account.
Clearly this is bad news - how this is even possible without proper proof of address is crazy.
Anyone have any experience with this?

You're going straight to prison in the morning. Probably in America, as it will turn out all the dirty FIFA money has been laundered through your address.
The only option is to run tonight, change your name and try to get on a flight to Rio. Plastic surgery is probably an idea too.

No, just a letter confirming the account opened with the credit limit.
I do have an external (very secure in my eyes) mailbox but wouldn't be able to tell if someone had found a clever way to fish mail out of it.

should have clarified....
The bank tells me that putting a flag on your credit file so that more than just a basic check is done when an account is opened, does not affect your credit score. I am, however, sceptical cos banks are cunts.

It will affect your credit score.
It goes slightly down whenever an account is opened.
It will go back once the account has been closed.
It took about 4 weeks

apparently there is a spate of this going round in Dagenham, and particularly if you live in a flat with an external mail box.
Ring the bank concerned and they will cancel the account. They can also put a flag on your credit file so that any applications in your name will get a bit more scrutiny. This won't affect your credit score so they tell me.....

Last time I was in the UK, I dropped into a branch of my bank enquiring if I could open a second account (been with them nearly 30 years), which I could use solely for on-line purchases.
The clerk gave me a look that can only before have been used by well informed children when Milhouse whipped out his big bag of sweets and started offering them around.

We've had insurance documents through for a bloke and his brother who have insured a ford focus and put our address down.
Definitely not a former tenant as my girlfriend has been in the house for 5 years and I knew the people before that (unless she hasn't told me about an ex boyfriend of African decent?).
Insurance company decided to send him a letter asking him to contact them asap to discuss an urgent matter. The divvy cunts obviously then sent that to our address also!

Happened to me.
Someone opened another Halifax bank account and I became aware when receiving a debit card with different sort code & account number to my original account.
Halifax told me they applied online with just my name, address & DOB.
The fraudster then opened an Aqua credit card.
Nothing lost/spent. Both accounts closed. A falg was put on my credit report highlighting need for extra vigilance.

really surprises me that they could get an account without living there HH. banks are usually super tight about new accounts...
